About the Port of Baltimore

Baltimore has been the leading U.S. port for cars and light trucks for many years, thanks to its roll-on/roll-off terminals and its location close to Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and the Midwest. It is a popular choice for exports to Europe and West Africa, and many forwarders run container-loading warehouses in the Baltimore area.

Roll-on/roll-off vehicles move through Baltimore’s marine terminals, while containerized cars are usually loaded at forwarder warehouses around Baltimore and central Maryland. Each facility has its own receiving hours and booking rules, so we deliver to the exact address on your forwarder’s instructions.

Common destinations: Northern Europe and the UK, West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana and neighboring countries), the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

Areas we pick up from most often for this port: Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the Ohio Valley. See also Maryland car shipping, Maryland car shipping guide.

How door-to-port delivery works

  1. Book the ocean shipment with an FMC-licensed freight forwarder, NVOCC or ocean carrier, and get the delivery instructions.
  2. Send us the delivery address, booking or dock receipt number, receiving hours and cutoff date.
  3. We assign a licensed carrier whose schedule fits your cutoff. For marine terminals, we look for drivers who can access the terminal, including a TWIC card where it is required.
  4. The driver inspects the car with you at pickup and you both sign the bill of lading.
  5. The car is delivered to the terminal or warehouse, and you or your forwarder receive the delivery receipt.
  6. Your forwarder files the export information with CBP at least 72 hours before export and loads the car.
