About the Port of New York and New Jersey
The Port of New York and New Jersey is the busiest port on the East Coast and one of the main gateways for cars leaving the United States. Most vehicle exports move through terminals in Newark, Elizabeth and the surrounding area, and many freight forwarders load cars into containers at warehouses in northern and central New Jersey.
Cars for export are delivered either to a marine terminal for roll-on/roll-off loading or to a forwarder’s warehouse, where they are loaded and secured inside containers. Terminals around Port Newark and Elizabeth handle RoRo and container cargo, and receiving rules, appointment systems and hours differ from one facility to the next. Your forwarder will tell you exactly where the car must go.
Common destinations: Europe (Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and Scandinavia), the Mediterranean, the Middle East and West Africa.
Areas we pick up from most often for this port: New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, eastern Pennsylvania, the Hudson Valley and New England. See also New York car shipping, New Jersey car shipping, New York City car shipping.

How door-to-port delivery works
- Book the ocean shipment with an FMC-licensed freight forwarder, NVOCC or ocean carrier, and get the delivery instructions.
- Send us the delivery address, booking or dock receipt number, receiving hours and cutoff date.
- We assign a licensed carrier whose schedule fits your cutoff. For marine terminals, we look for drivers who can access the terminal, including a TWIC card where it is required.
- The driver inspects the car with you at pickup and you both sign the bill of lading.
- The car is delivered to the terminal or warehouse, and you or your forwarder receive the delivery receipt.
- Your forwarder files the export information with CBP at least 72 hours before export and loads the car.
Documents to have ready
- The original title, or a salvage certificate or manufacturer’s certificate of origin
- A lienholder letter authorizing export if the car is financed
- The bill of sale if the car was recently purchased
- The owner’s ID, and the EIN or passport details your forwarder requests
- The booking or dock receipt number for the delivery

Tips for shipping a car to Port Newark
- Traffic around the port and the New Jersey Turnpike can slow deliveries, so leave a buffer before your cutoff.
- Many forwarder warehouses close early on Fridays; confirm the receiving hours.
- If your car is in Manhattan or another dense area, we may arrange pickup at a nearby garage or wide street where a carrier can load safely.
- Book the truck as soon as you have your sailing date; port cutoffs are firm.
- Leave no more than a quarter tank of fuel and remove personal items unless your forwarder allows them in a container.
- Tell us if the car does not run, so we send a carrier with a winch.
