About the Port of Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast
Houston is the main export gateway for vehicles from Texas and the central United States. The Port of Houston’s Barbours Cut and Bayport container terminals handle a large share of containerized cars, and roll-on/roll-off and vehicle services also call at nearby Galveston and Freeport. Many Houston-area forwarders specialize in shipping cars to Latin America, West Africa and the Middle East.
Containerized cars are usually delivered to a forwarder warehouse in the Houston area, loaded and secured, and then moved to the container terminal. Roll-on/roll-off cars go directly to the terminal named in your booking, which may be in Houston, Galveston or Freeport.
Common destinations: Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, West Africa and the Middle East.
Areas we pick up from most often for this port: Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado and the central United States. See also Houston car shipping, Texas car shipping, Moving to Texas with a car.

How door-to-port delivery works
- Book the ocean shipment with an FMC-licensed freight forwarder, NVOCC or ocean carrier, and get the delivery instructions.
- Send us the delivery address, booking or dock receipt number, receiving hours and cutoff date.
- We assign a licensed carrier whose schedule fits your cutoff. For marine terminals, we look for drivers who can access the terminal, including a TWIC card where it is required.
- The driver inspects the car with you at pickup and you both sign the bill of lading.
- The car is delivered to the terminal or warehouse, and you or your forwarder receive the delivery receipt.
- Your forwarder files the export information with CBP at least 72 hours before export and loads the car.
Documents to have ready
- The original title, or a salvage certificate or manufacturer’s certificate of origin
- A lienholder letter authorizing export if the car is financed
- The bill of sale if the car was recently purchased
- The owner’s ID, and the EIN or passport details your forwarder requests
- The booking or dock receipt number for the delivery

Tips for shipping a car to the Port of Houston
- Confirm whether your booking is for Houston, Galveston or Freeport before pickup.
- Hurricane season (June to November) can close the port for short periods; leave a buffer before your cutoff.
- Houston forwarders often consolidate several cars in one 40-foot container to lower the cost per car.
- Book the truck as soon as you have your sailing date; port cutoffs are firm.
- Leave no more than a quarter tank of fuel and remove personal items unless your forwarder allows them in a container.
- Tell us if the car does not run, so we send a carrier with a winch.
