About the ports of Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia
Georgia has two of the most important ports for vehicle exports in the Southeast. Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island Terminal is one of the busiest roll-on/roll-off vehicle ports in the country, and Savannah’s Garden City Terminal is one of the largest container terminals in the United States. Together they make Georgia a natural export gateway for cars from Atlanta, Florida and the Carolinas.
Roll-on/roll-off vehicles usually move through Brunswick, while containerized cars are loaded at forwarder warehouses around Savannah and then trucked to the container terminal. Your forwarder will confirm which location your car goes to and the receiving cutoff.
Common destinations: West Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean and Latin America.
Areas we pick up from most often for this port: Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. See also Georgia car shipping, Georgia car shipping guide, Florida car shipping.

How door-to-port delivery works
- Book the ocean shipment with an FMC-licensed freight forwarder, NVOCC or ocean carrier, and get the delivery instructions.
- Send us the delivery address, booking or dock receipt number, receiving hours and cutoff date.
- We assign a licensed carrier whose schedule fits your cutoff. For marine terminals, we look for drivers who can access the terminal, including a TWIC card where it is required.
- The driver inspects the car with you at pickup and you both sign the bill of lading.
- The car is delivered to the terminal or warehouse, and you or your forwarder receive the delivery receipt.
- Your forwarder files the export information with CBP at least 72 hours before export and loads the car.
Documents to have ready
- The original title, or a salvage certificate or manufacturer’s certificate of origin
- A lienholder letter authorizing export if the car is financed
- The bill of sale if the car was recently purchased
- The owner’s ID, and the EIN or passport details your forwarder requests
- The booking or dock receipt number for the delivery

Tips for shipping a car to Savannah and Brunswick
- Savannah and Brunswick are about 80 miles apart, so make sure the delivery address matches your booking.
- Summer heat and storm season can affect port operations; leave extra time between delivery and your cutoff.
- Florida buyers often ship through Georgia when sailings to their destination are more frequent there.
- Book the truck as soon as you have your sailing date; port cutoffs are firm.
- Leave no more than a quarter tank of fuel and remove personal items unless your forwarder allows them in a container.
- Tell us if the car does not run, so we send a carrier with a winch.
